Unified Signaling System

Signals help our trains communicate. They tell them when to stop, when to go, when to slow down, and when they can speed up. Not all signal systems are built the same and the Orange and Green lines currently operate on a different signal system than the Red and Blue lines. Under the Transform program, the signaling system on the Red and Blue lines – called the legacy system because it is what started light-rail transit at DART – will be updated to improve reliability and allow the light rail system to function the same across the entire network.

These changes are also necessary to accommodate new light rail vehicles that will be operational in 2029. Many of the light-rail vehicles (LRVs) in DART’s fleet are nearing the end of their lifespan, so as the fleet is updated the technology on the new LRVs will communicate more efficiently with the new signal system.

In addition to unifying the signal system, signal house back-up power will also be added. During power outages trains do not receive the signals that tell them to stop, go, slow down or what speed they should be traveling. This back-up power system will keep signals functioning and trains moving.

Weather can also impact the signal system. Signal substations are susceptible to lightning strikes. When this happens, there is a loss of power in that area of the alignment, which stops the vehicles. The control system in the signal house will be upgraded to prevent lightning strikes from destroying the circuit boards and causing service interruptions across the light-rail network.
