New buses with updated technology, improved safety features and customer amenities are being added to the current fleet. As the newer buses are added to the fleet, the older buses will be decommissioned. DART plans to have 60 new buses in operation by summer 2026 ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
The new buses incorporate several amenities identified by customers and include new passenger information displays, vinyl seats, sideview mirror cameras, bike racks, CCTV/security cameras, and an operator barrier shield. The new fleet will be powered by compressed natural gas, making them environmentally friendly.
In addition to new buses, DART is replacing old bus shelters with new shelters that are designed to enhance protection from the elements and weather to keep riders comfortable, provide real-time arrival displays to track the bus location, and use reliable solar-powered lighting for added safety and visibility. The updated design also includes silver metal strap benches that are easy to clean and provide more comfortable seating with backs, as well as trash cans with lockable lids and front door access.
As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing rider comfort and accessibility, 172 new concrete amenity pads have been installed at bus stops across the network. These pads provide level boarding and deboarding surfaces at both the front and rear doors of buses, improving safety and convenience for all riders. They also create a stable foundation for amenities such as benches, shelters, and trash receptacles. By replacing uneven or unpaved areas with durable concrete, we are ensuring safer, more accessible waiting spaces—especially for riders using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers.
The upgrades are part of a broader effort to modernize bus stop infrastructure and maintain ADA compliance. Additional upgrades, including the installation of new bus shelters, will continue throughout the DART system over the coming years.
